Canada has a mature onshore industry, especially in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin. Canada exports more crude oil than it imports, with the majority of exports going to the United States (U.S.). Canada is one of the largest suppliers of crude oil to the U.S. and the largest supplier of natural gas.
About half of the country's initial conventional hydrocarbon resources are located in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin. Most of the basin's remaining hydrocarbon potential is bitumen, with a much smaller portion being natural gas and heavy oil.
In 2010 Canada's proven reserves for natural gas were estimated at 1727 trillion cubic metres and for conventional oil and bitumen at 27.8 billion cubic metres. Placing Canada third in the world in proven oil reserves after Saudi Arabia and Venezuela, and as well as the only non-OPEC member in the top five countries.
