Canada has a mature onshore industry, especially in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin. Canada exports more crude oil than it imports, with the majority of exports going to the United States (U.S.). Canada is one of the largest suppliers of crude oil to the U.S. and the largest supplier of natural gas.

About half of the country's initial conventional hydrocarbon resources are located in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin. Most of the basin's remaining hydrocarbon potential is bitumen, with a much smaller portion being natural gas and heavy oil.

Canada's National Energy Board estimates that the total initial resources include 325.6 billion cubic metres of conventional oil and bitumen and 61.1 trillion cubic metres of natural gas.
