Pipeline Operations
Canadian companies use innovative computerized inspection programs and technologies to meet the strict requirements of pipeline transport, as well as to cope with the challenging landscape and environmental conditions.
Major pipeline networks are controlled from central dispatch centres in Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta. Computerized monitoring, control and leak detection systems are integrated in the dispatch centre.
- To detect leaks, smart pig systems are used along with advanced Magnetic Flux Leakage and Ultrasonic Technologies. Mechanized ultrasonic inspection, which tests for integrity of girth welds, is replacing earlier technologies such as radiography to inspect automatic welds.
- Other automated integrity monitoring programs are being developed. The focus is to fully integrate remote monitoring and corrosion evaluation tools into a single system.
